What Were You Wearing?

March 2025

In fashion, this question celebrates identity, creativity, and influence. But for survivors of sexual violence, it’s used to blame them for the violence that happened to them. There is never an excuse, justification, or invitation for sexual abuse of any form. Period.

Shelterhouse will be tackling this victim-blaming myth in an exhibit generously hosted by the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library.

At this exhibit, survivor stories will be displayed alongside anonymous stories detailing community members' experiences with sexual assault, highlighting the fact that survivors are NEVER at fault for the abuse or violence that they experience

We would love to highlight as many local survivors as possible, and represent a wide range of ages, gender identities, and experiences. If you are interested in sharing your story & outfit descriptions anonymously during this exhibit, click the link below!

Please direct questions regarding this exhibit to Lizzy Kennedy, Communication & Outreach Coordinator, at kennedy@shelterhousemidland.org
